The standard method of diagnosing a dental cavity is rather primitive. Typically, the dentist will probe the tooth surface with a sharp metal instrument. If the probe can penetrate the surface, it means the enamel is softened by decay. As you might know from experience, that technique is not comfortable, and it can even be painful.
