Can the STOP-BANG Questionnaire Help Identify Your Sleep Apnea Risk?
If you snore, wake up feeling exhausted, or experience daytime weariness, you might be one of the millions of Americans who suffer from undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. At Transcendentist® in Berkeley, California, Drs. Ruhi Sangha and Praj Kamat offer holistic, client-centered care that considers your teeth and gums and how well you sleep. The STOP-BANG Questionnaire is one of the most widely used screening tools for identifying sleep apnea risk.
1. What is the STOP-BANG Questionnaire?
The STOP-BANG Questionnaire is a widely used screening tool developed to identify individuals who may be at risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It takes only a few minutes to complete and evaluates eight key risk factors associated with this condition. Each “yes” answer is worth one point, and a higher total score suggests a greater likelihood of OSA. We use this questionnaire as a starting point to help clients determine whether they should pursue further evaluation, such as a sleep study.
2. Understanding the Eight STOP-BANG Questions
Each letter in “STOP-BANG” corresponds to a specific risk factor. Answer the following questions with “Yes” or “No”:
S – Are you a loud snorer (louder than speech or loud enough to be heard during private conversations)?
T – Do you often feel Tired, fatigued, or sleepy during the daytime?
O – Has anyone noticed that you cease breathing when you’re sleeping?
P – Are you having or being treated for high blood Pressure?
B – Is your Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35?
A – Are you Age 50 or older?
N – Does the circumference of your neck exceed 17 inches (men) or 16 inches (women)?
G – Are you Gender male?
3. How Scoring Works
Each “Yes” answer scores one point. Once you have answered all eight questions, add up your total.
- 0 to 2 points: Low risk of obstructive sleep apnea
- 3 to 4 points: Intermediate risk
- 5 to 8 points: High risk
- Note: If you answered “Yes” to two or more STOP questions and have a BMI over 35, neck circumference above the threshold, or are male, you are considered at elevated risk even if your total score is lower.

4. What Your Results Could Mean
A low score suggests your risk of sleep apnea is minimal, but it may be time to explore further testing if your score is three or higher. Obstructive sleep apnea can lead to serious health issues like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment if left untreated. Even if you are unsure about some of your responses, your answers provide a valuable starting point for a conversation with Drs. Sangha, Kamat, and the team in Berkeley, California.
5. Why Early Detection is So Important
Sleep apnea can sneak up on people quietly, often unnoticed for years. Left unchecked, it can impact your energy levels, immune system, and mood. The STOP-BANG Questionnaire is a quick, accessible way to assess whether you should take the next step. We take sleep health seriously and offer various solutions to help you sleep more soundly and feel more awake during the day.
