Every
summer a group of volunteers headed by Dr. Karen Sokal-Gutierrez,
physician and professor at UCB/UCSF Joint Medical Program, heads
to El Salvador to participate in programs to provide health education
and assistance to the rural poor there. For the last two years,
Dr. Sokal-Gutierrez has been supporting the thesis project of one
of her students from the UCSF/UCB joint medical program, examining
dental health of children in rural El Salvador. This summer she
returns to deliver the results of that study to the health educators
who work directly with the population to improve their dental health.
Transcendentist is proud to support the work of
Dr. Sokal-Gutierrez and her team by donating 500 toothbrushes
for the children in El Salvador, which will be hand carried by
them in late July. These toothbrushes are made from 100% recycled
plastic so we're modeling both good oral hygiene and sustainability!
Dr.
Sokal-Gutierrez' team is hosted by an organization called ASAPROSAR,
which stands for the Salvadoran Association for Rural Health.
ASAPROSAR trains community leaders in the areas of health, nutrition,
child development, the environment and sustainable agriculture.
